POLICE in Lusaka have arrested three suspected criminals in connection with the riot that occurred in Chibolya.
It is alleged that on October 23, between 15:00 hours and 16:00 hours, suspected criminals in the compound ran amok claiming that they were revenging the death of their colleague who died on October 19, this year.
The suspects are alleged to have gone round armed with machetes targeting to loot some shops within Chibolya.
In a statement, police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said upon hearing that Police officers were alerted, they escaped and instead vented their anger on persons they suspected to have called the Police.
He said the suspects allegedly hacked five people leaving them with multiple deep cuts on their bodies.
“Police officers who rushed to the other scene of the incident found the victims identified as Amos Banda aged 23, Daniel Kalinda aged 25, Martin Mubanga, Innocent Kalima and Nduwayo Jeomorie all aged 28 lying in blood with deep cuts on their bodies. They were rushed to the hospital where they are currently admitted.
In addition, the suspects are alleged to have damaged a windscreen of one motor vehicle, a Nissan Patrol bearing registration number ABM 7601,” he said.
Mr Mwale said police managed to arrest three suspects who have since been charged with Malicious Damage to Property and Unlawful Wounding.
He said the three were identified as David Chanda aged 20, Daniel Kalunga and Gift Menya both aged 22 all of unmarked house numbers in Chibolya compound.
Mr Mwale said the three are detained in Police custody while Investigations have intensified.
In a related incident, Police received a report of aggravated robbery in which six suspected criminals who were armed with machetes broke into a named company along Mumbwa road after attacking a security guard who they tied and hacked.
He said the suspects broke into one of the Director’s office and blew up the money safe and went away with 21,000 US dollars, K133, 623 and scanners valued at K37, 500.
Mr Mwale said two suspects aged 38 and 39 have been arrested in connection with the incident.
“The incident occurred on October 23, 2023 around 01:00 hours.Police officers were alerted and rushed to the scene where the guard identified as Julius Sinkala aged 55 was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple cuts on his body. His hands and legs were tied. Machetes are believed to have been used in the act. He was rushed to the hospital where he is admitted,” Mr Mwale said.
