Remember the name? Kabange Mupopo returns to Copper Queens

Published

on

MULTITALENTED Kabange Mupopo has found her way back in the Copper Queens squad close to a decade after she quit football to fully focus on athletics.

Copper Queens coach Bruce Mwape has named Mupopo in his 30 – woman provision squad ahead of 2024 Olympics qualifier against Ghana.

Mupopo was part of the Zambia team that played at the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAfCON) that was staged in Namibia in 2014.

However, with women’s football less lucrative in those days, she fully focused on athletics specializing in the 400-meter races, running at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mupopo was a gold medalist at the 2015 All-Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

In 2018, her Athletics shine was dimmed when she was handed a four-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after testing positive for a prohibited substance at the 2017 World Championships.

Last year, she returned to football, turning up for Green Buffaloes and coach Bruce Mwape has handed her a call up.

“Green Buffaloes striker Kabange Mupopo also returns to the Copper Queens squad for the first time in eight years,” a FAZ statement read in part.

Zambia plays Ghana on February 23 for the first leg before the return fixture will be played in Ndola five days later.

Solwezi Stadium works not fully complete

Published

on

FOLLOWING a public backlash over the poor rehabilitation works at Solwezi’s Independence Stadium, Football House has clarified that the works are not 100 percent complete.

At the weekend, Netizens had a field day mocking the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) while others were taken aback when pictures of the ‘rehabilitated’ stadium circulated online.

The rehabilitation works at the Solwezi Independence Stadium cost US$300,000.

“We wish to set the record straight over the works on the Independence Stadium in Solwezi. Just like we did for the already completed David Kaunda Stadium, we will have an official handover of the Independence stadium in Solwezi with FIFA representatives, government officials, local authorities and FAZ. The handover will be preceded by a thorough inspection to be done by all the stakeholders,” FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga said.

Kamanga said the contractor was still working on final touches for the overall infrastructure while the pitch installer had completed their work.

“We also wish to inform members of the public that the bulk of the US300,000 for this project was allocated to the installation of the natural pitch. The amounts allocated for the FIFA project was purely for rehabilitation and not for erecting a new stadium. We thought we should clarify on that aspect so that the publics` expectation can be managed.”

FAZ through FIFA was awarded USD1.5 million for five projects that include four provincial stadia and one accommodation center.

FOOTBALL House has said it will ensure Chipolopolo are adequately prepared for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Morocco and Tanzania in June.

After a disappointing AfCON outing, Zambia will shift focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with Morocco and Tanzania being the opponent.

Ironically, Chipolopolo failed to beat either team at the AfCON when they met last month.

“We have lined up possible engagements for the Chipolopolo during the March FIFA window as we keep our sights on the June back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania and Morocco respectively,” Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga said.

He said, “We have no doubt that the team will be in a position to give their best when they resume action next month and beyond,”

Zambia are second in the World Cup qualifying group with three points after recoding one win and one loss.
