PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is tomorrow scheduled to undertake a one day official visit to Mozambique to grace the inauguration ceremony of the expanded and modernised facilities at Nacala port.
The Nacala Corridor encompasses Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi.
Thus during the Inauguration Ceremony, President Hichilema, Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera will also preside over the signing of three agreements relating to the Nacala Development Corridor.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Stanley Kakubo said President Hichilema’s visit is at the invitation of President Nyusi.
“During the Inauguration Ceremony, President Hichilema, President Nyusi and Dr Chakwera will preside over the signing of three agreements relating to the Nacala Development Corridor that will, among other things, establish a framework for joint planning and decision-making,” he said.
He said the expanded and modernized facilities at the Nacala Port in Mozambique will help to increase efficiency in handling larger volumes of cargo, promote safer and competitive transportation along the corridor, lower the transit transport costs and ensure faster delivery of goods.
Mr Kakubo said it remains a significant corridor for Zambia as it presents the shortest route to the coast for the country’s imports and exports, thereby providing an avenue for reduced transportation costs.
“Through the corridor, the extractive industry and other economic activities are connected to the Nacala Port for export, feeding into the global value chains. ”
Mr Kakubo added that President Hichilema has prioritized the development of transport corridors as they are essential to improving trade facilitation and enhancing socio-economic integration in the southern African region.
“Therefore, that the launch of the improved facilities at Nacala Port and the signing of the Nacala Development Corridor agreements will not only solidify the existing excellent bilateral relations that Zambia enjoys with Mozambique and Malawi, but will also bolster other economic subsectors such as agriculture, tourism, mining, energy, fisheries and livestock for the benefit of the people,” he said.
