PREPARATIONS for this year’s 34th African Union Ordinary Summit of Heads of States scheduled to take place on 6th and 7th of February 2021, have started.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, His Excellency, Mr. Emmanuel Mwamba said this year’ Summit will be preceded by the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC) and the Executive Council of Ministers’ meetings.
Mr. Mwamba who is also Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, stated that the PRC and the Executive Council meetings would be held virtually owing to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
He however indicated that the final decision for Heads of States to either meet virtually or not is still under discussion.
Mr. Mwamba stated that some critical issues to be discussed and determined at the summit included, the election and appointment of the Chairperson and Deputy of the African Union Commission and six Commissioners.
Mr. Mwamba expressed confidence that the Zambian delegation was hopeful that its candidate, Ambassador Albert Muchanga, who is seeking re-election for the position of Commissioner for Trade, will go through.
The Summit is also expected to discuss the impact of the COVID -19 pandemic on Africa and its economies and proposed mitigation measures to be implemented.
And Mr. Mwamba called on artists in Zambia to take keen interest in the programmes being implemented by the African Union on arts, culture and heritage.
He said the Heads of States have recognised the importance of arts and culture and have dedicated the year 2021 to the arts.
The Theme for this year’s Summit is ‘’ Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”
