A POLICE has been dragged to court for allegedly stealing a AK47 rifle worth K3, 000 belonging to the Government of the Republic of Zambia.
The suspect, Given Kayelu, 26, is charged with theft by servant.
It is alleged that between June 4 and 6 this year, while employed as a police officer, Kayelu stole an AK47rifle worth K3000, a government property which came into his possession by virtue of his being employed in the public service.
Kayelu yesterday appeared before Lusaka magistrate Ireen Wishimanga and pleaded not guilty to the charge and applied for bail through his lawyer.
“We have an application for bail pending trial. Section 123(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code enjoins this court to exercise its discretion to grant bail pending trial.
“The accused is of fixed abode and has credible sureties. It is our application that you use your discretion to grant bail with favourable conditions,” the lawyer said.
In her ruling, magistrate Wishimanga granted the accused bail in the sum of K20, 000 in his own recognize with two working sureties in the same conditions.
Trial starts on November 7 this year.
Kayelu is also appearing in another court charged with obtaining money by false pretences.
In this case, he is accused of using his colleagues NRC and payslip to obtain a K65, 746 loan from Exchanger Financial Lending Institution.
The court heard that the accused allegedly forged Ntebeka Luyando’s NRC, placed his face on it and started receiving the loan.
Mr Luyando narrated that he came to know Mr Kayelu because it was not his first time the accused got a loan using his details. It’s more than five or six times.
