PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has pledged continued support to all sports disciplines in the country, maintaining that there is no minor sport in the eyes of his government.
In Zambia, like most parts of the globe football is considered the biggest sport while these other disciplines have had to settle for the tag of minor sport.
However, in most cases, these same minor sports have on several occasion reaped success for the nation on the international stage while football has nothing more than the 2012 Africa Cup of Nation title to brag about.
Mr Hichilema said during the official opening of the third session the thirteenth national assembly that government’s policy is premised on equal support to all sports disciplines.
He said government has in the last two years supported over 5000 young people from different sporting codes.
“We supported over 5,000 youth in various sports disciplines. the support comprised air tickets, sports attire, accommodation and allowances, among others, to enable them participate in various tournaments.
“we also congratulate all those who have excelled and have been awarded medals in other sporting disciplines.
“we reiterate that our policy continues to encourage equal support in all sports. there is no minor sport,” we urge all our sportsmen and women to build on the gains we have made and continue to fly the Zambian flag high. we will continue to cheer you on,” he said.
He also congratulated the Copper Queens on their debut appearance at the World Cup in New Zealand as well as Chipolopolo’s qualification to the Africa Cup for the first time since 2015.
