THE Ndola church Diocese Benjamin Phiri has called on the church and well-wishers at large to help mobilise aid both monetary and in kind for tropical cyclone Freddy victims in Malawi.
Bishop Phiri said the donation should be done on the Fourth Sunday of Lent which falls on March 19th.
Malawi has been hit with havoc by tropical cyclone Freddy, leaving more than 300 dead and more than 40,000 house holds in distress.
Bishop Phiri has since called for donations in form of money and material support for the victim’s.
This comes after the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) on March 14th made a statement calling all Catholics and people of good will to stand in prayer and support victims of the devastating tropical storm.
“As you may be aware through news and other media platforms, the Southern part of Malawi has been badly hit by the Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the tropical storm that has made extensive destruction to property and life from March 12th, 2023 and over 300 persons have reportedly died, several of them injured, and a lot of destruction to houses, roads, bridges and other facilities have been recorded. It is to this effect that the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) on 14th March, 2023 made a Statement calling all Catholics and the people of good will to stand in prayer and support the victims of this devasting tropical storm by immediately starting to donate whatever they can, in form of money and in kind, “to help the victims who have been affected and are suffering from the effects of the cyclone,” Bishop Phiri said.
He has since appealed in solidarity with the people of Malawi that donations be made.
“Therefore, in solidarity with people of Malawi, I, now make this appeal that you make donations in form of money and material support like clothes, shoes, beddings, mealie meal and other usable items. This donation should be done on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, 19th March and what will be collected should be brought to the Diocesan Pastoral Offices on Monday, 20th March, 2023,” he said.
