TRIAL in a case Lumezi parliamentarian Munir Zulu is accused of defaming two cabinet ministers failed to kick off yesterday because the prosecution team did not have access to a document to aid the proceedings.
A prosecutor informed Lusaka chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili that the State was ready to proceed with one witness but could not do so.
The prosecutor said this is because the documents the witness was supposed to make reference to was not available and consequently, they were not available to proceed and asked for an adjournment.
Mr Zulu’s defence did not object the application for an adjournment.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to September 20 this year for commencement of trial.
This is in a case Mr Zulu is facing three counts of libel after he claimed that two cabinet ministers each received US$250,000 bribes.
The complainants in the matter are Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi and Road Development Agency board chairperson Mulchanda Kuntawala.
Allegations are that on March 21, 2023, Mr Zulu, with intent to defame, unlawfully published defamatory matter against Dr Musokotwane through a press conference.
He alleged that the minister corruptly received money amounting to US$250, 000, through bank transfer from unknown company.
It is alleged in the second count that on the same date and with intent to defame, the lawmaker unlawfully published defamatory matter against Mr Milupi through a press conference.

In the third count, it is alleged that on the same day, Mr Zulu, with intent to defame, unlawfully published defamatory matter against Mr Milupi through a press conference.
He alleged that Mr Kuntwala corruptly sent US$150,000 to Mr Milupi, two days before the appointment of the former.
