A BOOTH teller of Lusaka has pleaded guilty to stealing K70, 000 from his employer and used part of the money to bet.
The accused, Dainess Mulenga, 19, is charged with theft by servant.
It is alleged that on January 21, 2023, the accused, being employed by Chishala Chandwe as a booth teller, she stole K77, 275, cash, the property of her employer.
On Tuesday, the accused appeared before Lusaka magistrate Mutinta Mwenya for plea and admitted committing the offence.
Asked why she stole the money, the accused explained that she initially had a shortage of K20,000 and did not inform her employer about the development.
Mulenga told the court that she then got part of her employer’s money and opened a 1xBet account so that she could win and recover the missing K20, 000.
“I started betting using K57,000 but I lost, meaning in total, the shortage was now over K70, 000,” she explained.
Magistrate Mutinta said since the accused is only admitting being responsible for the part of the missing money, she will record that she admits stealing the money she invested in betting.
The court adjourned the case which is being tried by public prosecutor Malama Chisenga, to a later date for reading of facts and possible sentencing.
