Lungunomics has set a positive trajectory for the Kwacha’s strength, says Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

A RENOWNED Economist says government’s fiscal policies and the Bank of Zambia’s monetary policy have managed to contain the negative effects of COVID-19 thereby setting a positive trajectory for the Kwacha’s strength.

Commenting on the appreciation of the Kwacha against major currencies, Dr Lubinda Haabazoka said domestic factors which are positively affecting the kwacha include increased forex inflows from the mining industry amid the successful row out of the Covid 19 vaccination process.

He said exports of agriculture produce following yet another bumper harvest has also contributed to the Kwacha gain.

Dr Haabazoka said forex inflows attributed to the demand for cheaper Zambian goods amid price increases in the region have also positively affected the kwacha.

“The Zambian kwacha has for the 5th straight day posted positive results against the US dollar.Opening at close to k23 per dollar on Monday, the kwacha has been slowly but bullishly fighting back against the dollar breaking the k20 barrier by posting gains to reach k20,7 per dollar,” he said

Dr Haabazoka further said the Bank of Zambia continued gold purchases has also increased investor perception as gold reserves are now forming a credible indicator of economic growth.

“Non domestic economic factors positively contributing to the appreciation of the Zambian kwacha include among others: the relatively peaceful environment during the election period, investor confidence in the governance structure of the country as Zambia was highly exposed to the international community during the mourning period of our beloved First Republican President,” he said

Dr Haabazoka further said the commissioning of the 750 MW Kafue lower power project by President Edgar Lungu has also enhanced investor confidence as Zambia is seen to be a major exporter of energy at a time countries like South Africa are experiencing massive load shedding.

He said among global factors positively affecting the kwacha is the anticipated $650bn SDR issue to all member countries by the IMF in a bid to enhance global liquidity and kickstarting global economic growth.

Dr Haabazoka said Zambia is expected to receive around $1.4bn pushing its reserves to above $3.1bn.

He further explained that the South African looting incidence has also forced investors to look at Zambia as a base for their business activities in South Africa as Zambian authorities are perceived favorable when it comes to issues of peace and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is why we continue to make the investment in local content and channels a priority to add value not only to our customers but to also grow Africa’s video content industry,” remarked Leah Kooma, Managing Director at MultiChoice Zambia.

The event, which was held at the Quorum, attracted special guests, filmmakers, influencers, artists, journalists and creative industry leaders. The attendants both physical and virtual were taken on a MultiChoice Zambia journey through the past, present and future of the company’s investments.

Speaking when he gave a highlight of local content, Chikombo Handahu, Head of Marketing, MultiChoice Zambia said there was interesting content that viewers should look forward to, “Every time we hit your screen, its pure magic, the intrigue and drama is spellbinding, the fun and laughter, warms your hearts.”

During the event, it was revealed viewers should look forward to brand new seasons and fresh new content from Zambezi Magic and One Zed, like Makofi which comes back in November, the fun and not so fun adventures of single life on Amooye which comes back in January 2022 and the growing tantrums, mischiefs and laughter in Mpali.

In October, viewers will be treated to the spellbinding drama such as secrets, betrayal, greed and love are exposed as a family fights for control of a music empire in Mungoma. And Belinda is Back with full force plans for Shi Mumbi to leave Bana Mumbi.

For romantic and fancy grand gestures of love the relationship-based reality shows like Yes! Ndio Beeni and Our Perfect Wedding the remix will keep viewers on their seats on Honey TV.

BetPawa Zambia, a leading online sports betting company, has launched a campaign dubbed dream maker aimed at giving back to the Zambian people who tremendously support the business.

The campaign is aimed at helping people’s dreams come true.

This initiative was communicated last Saturday at Waterfalls Mall by the newly unveiled betPawa Africa Brand Ambassador Oluwatosin Ajibade, popularly known Mr. Eazi, who also handed over a brand new Toyota Rush worth over $32,000 to David Mulenga, the winner of the August EPL campaign.

UPND appoints, Stafford Mulusa, as Government Chief Whip in Parliament

THE UPND in parliament has appointed Stafford Mulusa as Government Chief Whip and Princess Kasune as Deputy Government Chief Whip.

And the Opposition PF has also appointed Brian Mundubile as Leader of the Opposition and Stephen Kampyongo as its Party Whip.

This is according to a press statement issued by Speaker of the National Assembly Madam Nelly Mutti as circulated by the National Assembly.

“Hon Members, I wish to inform the House that the United Party for National Development has appointed Mr Stafford Mulusa, MP, as Government Chief Whip and Ms Princess Kasune, MP, as Deputy Government Chief Whip,” Madam Speaker said.

“Similarly, the Patriotic Front Party has appointed Mr Brian Mundubile, MP, asLeader of the Opposition and Mr Stephen Kampyongo, MP, as its Party Whip.”
