FORMER President Edgar Lungu said his renting a house from a professional footballer is a testament to the fact that football can be a viable career path.
The former head of state is one of the most famous tenants in Zambia, renting a house of Chipolopolo defensive pillar Stoppila Sunzu.
Lungu said this at his residence where the Footballers and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (FAWUZ) handed him a merit award for his contribution to football four years after it was conferred on him.
In 2019, FAWUZ decided to hand Lungu what is termed as a merit award for his contribution to the development of football and safeguarding of player welfare in Zambia.
The award was presented to Lungu and former first lady Esther at their residence in Lusaka.
Former FAWUZ general secretary Linos Chalwe, in the company of other officials, presented the award to the former president.
“So, in 2019, we came up with an idea to honor the former republican president for his services to Zambian football and especially football players,” Chalwe, a former Chipolopolo international said.
Chalwe said the certificates have been gathering dust in the FAWUZ offices and he thought it wise to give the former president before they get damaged.
“Being the founder [ of FAWUZ] I thought it wise because these certificates have been sitting idle the past three and a half years and I thought it only wise to say ‘look, before they get damaged…’
“We don’t want to honor people, there is a trend not only in Africa but across the globe of honoring people when they are late, so thought, ‘no, we need to honor the president while they are still alive’” Chalwe said.
Chalwe hauled president Lungu for having helped the families of the Gabon Air Disaster victims with legal services after the air crash.
Meanwhile, in accepting the award, Lungu thanked FAWUZ for their gesture.
“I wish with great humility that I am very grateful to Mr Chalwe and his team and everyone behind the idea to honor us. I am informed that this is the highest honor your union can hand to an individual and I am humbled,“ he said.
Lungu said player welfare is important.
“Talking about player welfare, in greeting you I said, here I am, a tenant to a footballer, it shows that football can give you a livelihood, football kuti wapakama,” Lungu said.
