Love triangle, jealousy led man to kill sister in law, after she accepted marriage with another man

AN alleged love triangle turned deadly on Tuesday after a man axed to death his 20 year old sister-in-law, after she accepted marriage with another man.

Northern Province, Deputy Police commissioner Edwin Bwanga said Rabecca Mulenga of Mumba village in Chieftainess Chungu of Luwingu district in Northern Province was murdered by her brother in law Gilbert Mwape who is married to her elder sister.

He said the tragedy occurred after Rabecca accepted marriage with another man who approached her parents to start process of marriage arrangements.

Mr. Bwanga said this annoyed Gilbert who wanted to maintain both his wife and her young sister in the marriage.

He explained that after committing murder Gilbert later ran into a nearby bush where he went to commit suicide by hanging himself on a tree.

Mr Bwanga said Police in Luwingu rushed to the area and retrieved the dead bodies of both Rabecca Mulenga and Gilbert Mwape and took them to Luwingu district hospital mortuary.

Inmate commits suicide while in police cells

AN INMATE who was detained at Zamtan police post in Kitwe has taken his life by hanging himself on a burglar bar using a pair of socks.

The suspect was taken to the police after he attempted to steal a goat from a farm within Zamtan compound.

Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said Philison Kahalu 32 committed suicide in the early hours of yesterday while in police cells.

Mr Mweemba explained that Kahalu was found dead by Frederick Mulenga, 27,an inmate who went to the toilet.

Shortly after Mulenga noticed that his colleague had died he called the other two inmates who started calling for help from the police officers who were on duty.

“Kahalu in the company of other suspects went to a farm on January 27,2023 around  23:00 hours where they attempted to steal a goat, however the farm manager heard some noise and when he  went to check he found unknown people trying to slaughter a goat before stealing it. The other suspected criminals ran away but Kahalu was apprehended and taken to the police. Around 04:30 hours the officers on duty heard the other three suspects in custody shouting that one of them has committed suicide,”said Mr Mweemba.

Suspected copper thief shot dead in Chililabombwe

A suspected criminal has been shot dead after attempting to steal copper cathodes.

Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said the incident occurred today at 06:40 hours along International Road near Kakoso Stream Bridge in Chililabombwe District in which the Anti-Robbery squad, while conducting routine patrols along the said road, found three suspects on top of the truck attempting to steal copper cathodes.

He said the suspects had cut the ratchets used to tie the bundles together and were about to start throwing the copper cathodes off the moving truck.

Mr Mwale  said when police challenged them with firing warning shot, the suspects jumped off the Truck.

He however said efforts to stop them failed as they all scampered and unfortunately, one was hit by a bullet on his left knee and sustained a bullet wound.

“The suspect was apprehended and found with a matchete and a knife on him. Upon being interviewed, he identified himself as Marron kaluchelo aged 33 of kakoso plots in Chililabombwe District. He also revealed the names of the people he was with and where they take the Copper Cathodes after stealing,” he said.

Mr Mwale said suspect was rushed to Kaloso District Hospital for medical attention but later died around 10:30 hours.

“His Body is in the same Hospital mortuary awaiting formal identification and postmortem,” he said.

“Brief facts are that on January 31, 2023 at around 05:00 hours, the Anti-Robbery crack squad in Chililabombwe went for patrols in an effort to curb the rising Copper thefts and thefts of goods in transit.

Whilst doing patrols along the International Road, they spotted three suspects on top of the HOWO Truck registration number registration 2386 AT05 and trailer  registration number 2390 AT05 which was driven by Mukalay Richard aged 49 of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The truck was carrying copper cathodes enroute to Tanzania,” he said.

Mr Mwale added that police have launched a manhunt for the other suspects who are currently on the run.

Family of three among them a baby die after their canoe capsizes, police say

A FAMILY of three among them a baby have died after the canoe they were in capsized as they were trying to cross Kilumba river in Mushindamo district of North-Western province.

In the same incident, a mother who was also in the same canoe that capsized has lost her baby after discovering that it had died on her back after managing to swim to shore.

The bodies of the other deceased person’s have not yet been retrieved due to floods in the area.

North-Western commanding officer Davies Moola who confirmed the sad incident to Mwebantu said it occurred on Friday last week along Kilumba river in Mushindamo.

Mr Moola said the matter was reported Chieftaness Chikola’s retainer that five people had drowned.

“It was reported that five people namely Philius Kimpakete aged between 20 and 30 years, Liness Kabulwe aged between 19 and 25 years,Agnes Kimpakete aged between 7 to 11 months ,Swaze Bwato age not known and unknown names and age, but child to Swaze Bwato drowned in Kilumba river in chiefteness Chikola’s area in Mushindamo District.

The brief facts are that a group of people were coming from Mushindamo Border. When they reached at the same said river, started crossing using a canoe to the other side of the river, which was being paddled by Philius Kimpakete who managed to cross with a good number of them,” he said.

He said Mr Kimpakete, the now deceased and the paddler then picked up the , Ms Liness, also deceased who was carrying a child Agness Kimpakete on her back, and another woman Swaze Bwato who was also carrying a child.

“As they were crossing the river ,the canoe they were in capsized and they all fell into the same river. Swaze Bwato managed to swim with her child on her back and got out of the river. unfortunately it was discovered that, her child had died.”

“The paddler, his wife and their child, drowned and were carried away by the current of water. A search by the locals is underway .The relatives with help members of the Public have been advised to continue searching for the bodies. However, it is difficult to access the area, because it is impassable due to floods,” he said.
