COACH Avram Grant has defended goalkeeper Francis Mwansa’s display in the 4 – 2 win over Congo Brazzaville in the World Cup Qualifier at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Mwansa started the match ahead of Lawrence Mulenga but his performance seems to have not pleased a lot of supporters and journalists.
Mwansa received a public bashing of some fans, accusing the Green Buffaloes second-choice keeper for being at fault for the two goals that Zambia conceded in a space of two minutes.
Grant said in a post match interview that Mwansa the goal minder had a good performance.
“I think Francis is doing a very good job since he is playing but Lawrence did a very good job against Ivory Coast and Kalumba [Charles] the third goalkeeper [is good].
“This is a position that we want to see stability, anyone from these that will play will show good performance like Francis did in the last three games,” Grant said.
This was Mwansa’s third game in roll after playing the two international friendly matches against Egypt and Uganda.
Grant said Mwansa is a good keeper with a bright future.
“He is a good goal keeper for the future he is young,” Grant said.
Meanwhile, Grant conceded that his team went to sleep after getting the first goal.
“We started the game well, we were winning 1-0 then we slept a little bit and they scored two fantastic goals, they are a good team Congo,” he said.
He was impressed with his team’s command of the second half.
“Second half we dominated the game completely and this was a game that could have ended even more. We missed a lot of chances and they also missed a lot of chances but we deserved a win,” he said.
