AN Economic and Financial Crimes Court has found former Minister of Defence Geoffrey Mwamba with a case to answer in a matter he is accused of 24 charges among them possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Magistrate Sanford Ngobola has since placed Mwamba on his defence which he is expected to open on March 1,2023.
Magistrate Ngobola established that the prosecution team established a premafacie case against him from the evidence adduced in court so far.
“I have fully considered the evidence so far placed on record as well as the submissions by both the state and the defence and I find that the appearance of the evidence in the present case is such that there is a premafacie case.
“I find the accused person with a case to answer on all the 24counts, in light of the foregoing, I find the accused with a case to answer and put him on his defence on all the 24counts,” magistrate Ngobola said.
This is in a case the politician and businessman is 24 counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, eight counts of conflict of interest and involving money laundering.
On the 24, 15 involve possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, eight conflict of interest and one count of money laundering.
In one of the counts, it is alleged that between January 1, 2015 and June, 30, 2016, Mwamba, trading as Arizona Marketing and Distributor, possessed US$399,985, through a bank account in the names of Arizona Marketing and Distributors.
The money is reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
It is further alleged that between January 1, and 31, 2019, the accused possessed US$499,985, through Germins Motorways Limited Bank Account, property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
Further allegations are that between March, 1, 2020 and 31, 2020, the accused had K10million through his bank account held at Invest Trust Bank, property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
It is also alleged that he had another US$670,000, through his Bank Account, property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime among others.
