A MATTER in which eight Croatians were arrested and charged for attempted child trafficking of four children from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been discontinued.
This is after the state made an application for the matter to be discontinued under section 88 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Code chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Last year, the eight were arrested at the airport in Ndola on suspicion that they were attempting to traffic four children aged between one and three-years-old.
Damir Magic, an electrical technician ,Nadic Magic, a chemical teacher, Subosic Zoran, a musician, Immovic Subosic, a Constitutional Court administrator, Ladislav Persic, a veterinary doctor, Aleksandra Persic, a dog beauty stylist on ,Noah Kraljevic, a human rights activist and Ivona Kraljevic, a proxy woman at that country’s national theater, were arrested and charged for attempting to traffic children they had claimed to have adopted.
The couples who had been booked at a named lodge in Ndola had initially booked their rooms without having the children in question, but three days later, staff at the facility noticed the children when one of them could not stop crying.
However, the state through advocate Mahape Libakeni applied for the discontinuation of the case.
He said the matter which was meant to come up for continuation of trial was being discontinued by the people.
But, magistrate Dominic Makalicha who has granted the application in giving his ruling has warned that the discontinuation is not an acquittal.
“The matter is therefore discontinued. However, a reminder is that this is not an acquittal ,but a discharge,” he said.
