SITTING second of the group with one point, the Copper Queens need to pick a win when they face Angola today or face the possibility of taking an early flight home.
Zambia are in South Africa for the defense of the COSAFA Cup but their run did not start on a positive not after playing to a barren draw against Mozambique in the first game on Thursday.
One of the team’s struggles in the Mozambique draws was the strikers’ failure to penetrate the opposition defense, something that needs to improve today if they are to get anything out of Angola.
They may not admit it, but pressure is mounting for the defending champions ahead of a meeting with free scoring Angola. Angola beat Comoros 5 – 0 in their opening match.
“There is no pressure, for a long time [of] being underdogs, people are able to see that women’s football in Zambia is a [now] force,” coach Florence Mwila said.
Mwila is in charge of the team under the supervision of Bruce Mwape owing to the COSAFA policy that demands for a female head coach at their women’s tournaments.
Midfielder Everin Katongo is confident of a good result.
“People should expect a win from us because we really need to defend this championship, the people should deliver the good result, we did not come here to play or just add numbers in the tournament,” Katongo said.
Only one team from each group progresses to the semi final alongside one best second placed team across the three groups.
Currently, Zambia are the worst second placed teams across the three groups as they only have one point. Anything other than a win today may compromise their chances of progressing.
