COPPER Queens coach Florence Mwila has declared her team ready to start their COSAFA title defense beginning with a group match against Mozambique tomorrow.
On Tuesday, Zambia traveled to South Africa ahead of the COSAFA that started today.
Despite carrying an all-local based squad, Zambia is using the COSAFA as preparation for the Olympic Games qualifiers as well as the Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
There are about 11 new players in the team.
Mwila said in an interview that the move to bring in new players is aimed at consolidating the entire squad.
“The local players that we had in Morocco had a good experience, they are bringing in experience that will marry with what the local players did not have. This is an opportunity for the new players to showcase their talent,” Mwila said.
The test will begin tomorrow when they face Mozambique before taking on Angola and Comoros for the rest of the group stage.
Mwila said the team is ready.
“We are ready, we came here prepared because we know that being defending champions it is not an easy one because every prepares very hard to beat the best,” she said.
She said she is no under illusion that the group stage will be easy.
“It is not going to be an easy one because all the teams in the group are going to do the best we cannot relax because we won it, we want to win it again,” Mwila said.
Mwila will lead the team in place of Bruce Mwape as COSAFA policy demands that a female coach takes charge of the team at their tournaments.
