ZAMBIA can draw any of Africa’s heavyweights, including Morocco, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt or Ghana on their return to the Africa Cup when the draw is made next month.
After eight years of wandering in the wildness, Chipolopolo have returned to the promised land of AfCON under the leadership of Israeli coach Avram Grant.
However, Zambia’s return to the table of Africa’s elite could be soured depending on the teams the country is drawn with at the group stage of the tournament.
According to the Pots released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Chipolopolo have been placed in Pot Three alongside South Africa, Cape Verde Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, and Mauritania.
This means, the team cannot be drawn in the same group as those who are in Pot Three, leaving them with a chance to be pitted against some of the biggest nations that are in other pots.
Pot One has Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria Egypt, and Ivory Coast while Pot Two has Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In Pot Four, there is Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique. Angola, Tanzania, and Gambia.
The 24 qualified teams for the AfCON will be drawn into six groups of four nations each.
The draw will be held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on 12 October 2023.
