A 52-year-old man of Chingola on the Copperbelt has been detained in police custody to help with investigations after his wife died during a quarrel.
George Chokwe is alleged to have been heard exchanging insults with his wife Charity Mukobe, 52 who had gone home in a drunken state.
It is at this point that they exchanged insults when a loud bang was allegedly heard in the house and when their grand daughter Josephine Musonda went in, she found her grandmother laying on the ground with blood oozing from the nose.
When she asked her grandfather what had happened, he told her that her grandmother had fallen during the quarrel.
Copperbelt Province commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the incident occurred on November 11 at around 13:00 hours.
“Brief facts are that at 08:00 hours, the victim went for beer drinking and went back home around 12:00 hours in a drunken state. Around 12:30 hours whilst in the house, she picked up a quarrel with her husband. While the reporter (granddaughter) was seated outside on the veranda with a neighbor.ll she heard some exchange of insults which went on between the two for about five minutes. Later she heard a bang in the house like some thing had fallen on the ground,” he said.
He explained that she was later called inside by her grandfather and when she entered the house, she was surprised to see find het grandmother laying on the floor facing upwards with blood coming out of her nose.
Mr Mweemba said she tried to wake her up, but would not respond.
“She then questioned her grandfather what had happened and he replied that she fell on the mat during the quarrel and hurt herself. The granddaughter then informer her neighbour with whom she rushed her grandmother to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” he said.
He added that an inquiry file has been opened in the matter and the husband to the deceased has been detained in police custody to help with investigations.
