71-year-old man dies on the way to the hospital, police say
A 71-year-old man of South African descent has been found dead in the drivers seat of his car which was parked at the side of the road along Great North Road in Mkushi, Central Province.
Daniel Teodorus Ver Den Berg , who is also the branch Manager for SARO Agro Industry in Mkushi is believed to have been driving himself to the hospital when he unfortunately met his fate.
The deceased earlier before driving himself to Hospital is believed to have called the doctor , informing that he will be going, but unfortunately for him, he died on the way.
Central Province police commissioner David Chileshe who confirmed the unfortunate and sad incident to Mwebantu said it occurred between March 16th, this year and March 17th at 06:30 hours.
“Police have recorded an incident of sudden and unnatural death involving the branch Manager for SARO Agro Industry identified as Mr Daniel Teodorus Veb Den Berg aged 71 a South African National of Vidmar farms who was found dead in the drivers seat of his Nissan Hardbody Registration Number BAJ 5512 near Karan Filling Station with the vehicle parked slightly off the Great North road. The deceased was unwell and was on his way to Tusekelemo private hospital when he met his death,” he said.
Mr Chileshe said the deceased had earlier around 22:50 hours phoned the private hospital that he was unwell and was on his was on his way to see the doctor.
“However, he failed to make it. Police picked the body of the deceased and deposited it into Mkushi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem .Investigations into the death have been instituted,” he said.
Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy has died upon arrival at the hospital after being hit by a car.
Daliso Mwale is believed to have been crossing the road near Liteta market in Central Province, when he was hit by a Hino Ranger truck Registration number BAK 6977 being driven by Sampa Mutati who has since been detained in police custody.

Hippo crushes 71-year-old man’s upper right thigh bone
A 71-year-old man of Kaindu in Central Province area, has had his right femur crushed by a Hippo while fishing in the Kafue River. Sitali Sililo who was trying to catch fish when his boat was flipped over by a hippo which then attacked him and crushed his right upper thigh. Mr. Sililo was fortunately rescued by Mushingashi’s security department who received a distress call that a fisherman had been attacked by a hippo.
The team, through Mr. Sameki who is Mushingashi’s Security Assistant Supervisor, said following the distress call, they urgently coordinated the emergency assistance to rescue Mr Sililo.
“Knowing the injuries described, remoteness of the fishing village and lack of vehicle access to it, I arranged for a security boat to rescue Mr. Sililo and transport him to the nearest vehicle collection point on Mushingashi and to then transfer the patient over to the pre-requested Zambia National Service (ZNS) Kalenda Hill ambulance and medical team which was approximately 60km’s away,” Mr. Sameki said.
Mr Sameki and his security team had used their first aid skills to stop the bleeding, brace the broken leg and calm the panicked Mr. Sililo, before urgently transporting him to meet the ambulance at the rendezvous point.
“The ambulance team were very thankful for the assistance from the scouts. It was a great team effort between the community members who reported the attack and Mushingashi security team as well as the ZNS Kalenda Hill medical team to help Mr. Sililo get the urgent medical attention he needed, to save his life,” Mr. Sameki said.
And Mr Sililo in recounting the ordeal which happened on March 6th (2023) while in hospital at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) said that he had gone fishing in the morning at around 07:00 hours, when the hippo attacked him.
“I was in the water in my canoe and all I remember is that as I was trying to catch fish, I saw myself flying into mid-air and then dropped into the water after having my canoe being overturned by the hippo. It then attacked me and broke the bone in my upper right thigh,” he exclaimed in pain.
Mr Sililo who has since had his broken bone replaced with a metal bar says he is still in excruciating pain and has further called on well-wishers to come to his aid in terms of food support.
“Navutika (I am suffering) because I am in so much pain. All I can say is that I thank God I survived that day. One other thing that I am asking for is for Government or well-wishers to help me with food stuffs. My relatives are unable to meet all my needs and so I ask if I can be assisted in any way,” he said.
Clinical officer drowns on Lake Kariba
A Clinical officer based at Munyama Rural Health Centre in Siavonga District has drowned on Lake Kariba.
Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said Brocklin Mtonga aged 27 drowned after the dugout canoe he was in capsized near the harbor at Munyama Health Centre.
He said facts are that the victim went to play football at Matente village and on his way back home, he decided to use a waterway and boarded a dugout canoe which was been paddled by Milimo Buleke also of Munyama village.
Mr Mwale said initial investigations indicate that as they were approaching the harbor near Munyama Health Centre, their dugout canoe got filled with water causing it to capsize.
“His colleague managed to swim to safety while the victim went down together with the canoe,” he said.
Mr Mwale said the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 around 18:00 hours on Lake Kariba near Munyama Rural Health Centre in Siavonga District. “The body was retrieved around 22:00 hours. Police have opened an Inquiry File to establish the actual cause of the incident,” he said.

South African papa ‘heals’ Mwepu
A SOUTH-AFRICAN Pastor John Anosike of Word Faith in Cape Town has declared that 24-year-old Enock Mwepu has been healed of his heart problems.
The pastor said that Mwepu developed his heart condition as a result of consuming a sweet given to him by a friend.
Mwepu made headlines when last year when he was diagnosed with a heart condition which led to him shelving his career as the condition was said to possibly end his life had he continued with football.
Many sent out their words of sympathy to the young star, deciding for him to become a coach for young stars like him .
However, Mwepu in a video that has been trending online has been seen being prayed for by a South African based Pastor who claims that the young stars heart condition has been healed.
Mwepu revealed to the pastor that last year as he was on a plane travelling to attend international games and he was given a sweet by a friend.
He stated that since then, he developed a heart condition leading to him having heart palpitations.
“I just collapsed and they had to resuscitate me to wake up.Since then I came back to the UK and had to put a defibrillator to prevent heart palpitations,” he said.
After the testimony by Mwepu, Pastor Anosike declared that Mwepu was poisoned and further declared him healed.
