PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says only about 60 percent of the Zambian population is banked while millions of citizens still remain unbanked.
And President Lungu says it is encouraging to banks like ABSA making efforts towards making financial services available to the masses through innovative products like the Kongola and Kasaka products.
Speaking when he officiated at the opening of the ABSA bank Petauke Branch yesterday, President Lungu commended the bank for being a model investor in Zambia.
“My government has consistently promoted the need for financial inclusion and in a country where only about 60 percent of the population is banked, a vacuum exists where millions of the Zambian population are unbanked and outside the the formal banking sector,” President Lungu said.
President Lungu also thanked ABSA bank for standing the taste of time in Zambia both though good and challenging times.
“ABSA Zambia Plc, previously known as Barclay’s Bank has stayed the course in Zambia for over 102 years through good times and challenging times. This is the investment that needs to be emulated,” President Lungu said.
He said the bank has made great strides in living up to being a worthy and reliable partner in the country’s development agenda through provision of financial support in key sectors of the economy such as mining, energy, agriculture and the public sector.
