322 people died in road traffic accidents recorded in the second quarter of 2020, police say

POLICE say 332 people died in different road accidents which were recorded in the second quarter of 2020.

And Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says the command has raised K9,483,524 in admission of guilt fines in 2020.

Katongo in a statement said a total number of 6,143 road traffic accidents were recorded during the same period or which, 275 were fatal.

Katongo said 1,016 people sustained serious injuries while 1,770 sustained slight injuries.

Katongo said out to the total out of the total 6,143 accidents recorded,4,019 were Damages Only road traffic accidents.

She said Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents with 3,212 followed by Copperbelt with 1,121 whilst Western and Northern Provinces recorded the least with 130 and 125 road traffic accidents respectively.

Katongo said most of the accidents in the second quarter of 2020 were attributed to human error such as excessive speed, misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to nearside, cutting in, and reversing negligently.

And Katongo said police have noted increased levels of compliance by road users.

Trade Kings motor vehicle broken into K 98,000 stolen, police arrest three suspects

TWO (02) Zimbabwean nationals and one Zambian have been arrested by police for breaking into a Trade Kings car and stealing cash amounting to K98, 000.

And police have recovered K84, 000 out of the total stolen money and are further still looking for one more suspect who is still on the run.

Police around 11:30 hrs received a report of theft from motor a vehicle from Trade Kings Muchinga, Luapula and Northern regional manager Abbas Hussain aged 46yrs.

“He reported on behalf of the company that unknown persons did steal cash money from the company’s motor vehicle namely Toyota hilux bearing registration no. ALZ 3825 silver in color which was parked at indo Zambia bank along Independence road d/kasama by way of unlocking the drivers door and got away k98,025,” Hussain reported to police.

Acting on the report, the police made a follow up and found the criminals at Mwiluzi along Mbala-Kasama road where they had parked their Honda CRV registration No. ALP 2712 silver gray in color as they were changing a the front tyre.

Upon being challenged, the criminals ran in different direction and in the process, one suspect named Ndlovu Basil Bhekumuzi aged 40yrs of Bulawayo a Zimbabwean national was shot at in his left side of the thigh.

The two other suspects namely Soames Ndlovu aged 32yrs of 133 Matero East Lusaka also a Zimbabwean national based in Bulawayo and Silvester Phiri aged 38yrs of Matero Lusaka were apprehended.

“The suspect who was shot is recieving Medical treatment at kasama General Hospital whilst one suspect namely Amin (Mr Moyo) is on the run,”

Police have since retrieved K84,000 from the suspects and the vehicle which was being used has been impounded and kept as exhibits.

Police arrest Chilombwana who raped women while armed with a Machete

POLICE in Southern Province have apprehended a suspect who has been on the wanted list in connection with the spate of rape, unlawful wounding, arson, and assault cases experienced in Zimba and Kalomo Districts.

The suspect identified as Lucky Kaluwe aged 19 years commonly known as Chilombwana was apprehended by members of the public in Chilobe area of Chief Sipatunyana in Zimba District.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo in a statement said the suspect who had been on the police wanted list is alleged to have been armed with a Machete each time he committed offences and was relocating to other places after committing offences.

Katongo said the suspect was handed over to police on yesterday around 05: 30 hours by Mapatizya Member of Parliament Clive Miyanda.

“He has been Charged with one count of Arson, five counts of unlawful wounding and three counts of Rape. He is detained in custody and will appear in court soon,” Katongo said.

And Katongo commended members of the public in Chilobe area for acting swiftly in apprehending the suspect and further called on all those who could have been victims of attacks by the suspect to report to police.

9 year old boy of Monze dies in an ox-cart accident, police say

A nine (09) year old boy of Kwanu Village in Chief Choongo’s area of Monze District has died on the spot after an ox-cart he was in overturned.

Meanwhile, a 35 year old woman of Lusaka’s Bauleni Compound has allegedly been murdered by her boyfriend.

The accident happened yesterday at about 08:30 hours at Moonga Village in Monze and Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo has identified the victim as Alick Hasumbwe.

Katongo said the accident happened when the ox driven Cart, on which the victim was traveling in, hit into a stone and overturned.

And Katongo said the body of the deceased has been deposited in Monze Mission hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, a 35- year old woman of Bauleni Compound in Lusaka has allegedly been murdered.

Katongo said Alice Nyangu was found dead yesterday at around 11:00 hours in her house.

“Scene was visited and police suspect the victim to have been murdered as bruises were found on her left eye among other injuries,” Katongo said.

She said preliminary investigations have indicated that the victim had fought with her boyfriend in the night of 01 August, 2020 at unknown time .

And Katongo said police have already picked one suspect in connection with the murder while the body of the deceased has been deposited in the UTH mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
