8 People Die in 7 Road Traffic Accidents, Zambia Police Say

THE ZAMBIA Police Service has between 06:00 o’clock on 16th March 2013 and 06:00 o’clock on 17th March, 2013, recorded seven road accidents in which eight lives have been lost.
Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Ms. Elizabeth Kanjela has confirmed the sad development to Mwebantu New Media in a statement.
Ms. Kanjela said that “On the Copperbelt, two people died on the spot while four others were seriously injured after being hit by vehicle.The accident happened on 16th March, 2013 along the Kasumbalesa Road opposite PP Zambia Compound around 12:00 hours.Involved was a Toyota Corolla Registration number ACT 5262 driven by Winter Chilanga of House number W418 PP Zambia Compound who escaped unhurt.”
She said the accident happened when the driver due to excessive speed failed to negotiate a curve and hit six pedestrians who were off the road. A male child aged between 5 and 7 years and Steven Tembo aged between 30 and 40 years sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
She also disclosed that the other pedestrians namely Bridget Benga aged 24 sustained suspected fractures on both legs. Philip Kalukuluku aged 65 years, Alice Benga aged 16 years and a male baby aged 7 months all sustained bruises. The four are admitted at Konkola Mine Hospital.
In the aftermath of the accident an angry mob dashed to the scene and set the car ablaze. The vehicle was burnt to ashes.
The driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 while the bodies of the deceased are lying in Konkola Mine Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem.
“Still on the Copperbelt, a cyclist has died on the spot after being hit by a motor vehicle. The accident happened on 16th March, 2013 around 05:00 hours along the Ndola- Kitwe dual carriage way at Chimbotela, Kitwe.” She said.
The accident happened when an unknown motor vehicle driven by unknown person hit the cyclist Friday Chama aged 22 of Maposa area, Kitwe in a hit and run incidence. He sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.
The body is lying in Kitwe Central Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Ms. Kanjela said that in Central Province, a pedestrian lost his life after being hit by a Vehicle.
The accident happened on 16th March, 2013 around 19:30 hours Opposite Zambia Compound.
The accident happened when an unknown vehicle driving from south to north hit the pedestrian Stephen Chigola aged 16 in unexplained circumstances. He sustained a cut on the left side of the wait and died on the way to the Hospital.
The body is lying at Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
In Lusaka, One life was lost after two vehicles collided along the Great East road.
Involved was Ronald Zulu aged 33 of Chipta Compound who was driving a Fuso Fighter registration number AAV 9944. Also involved was Jelesani Lungu who was driving a Toyota Vintage registration number ALC 7026 who sustained serious injuries and is admitted to UTH.
A passenger Joseph Musonda aged 36 of Chisamba sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. The body is UTH awaiting postmortem.
In another incidence in Lusaka, a pedestrian has died after being hit by a Toyota Hiace Registration number ABV 1376 along Kafue Road near the footbridge.
“Kenneth Nananga aged 57 of unknown address in John Laing was trying to cross the road when he was hit. The driver of the Vehicle Ngulube aged 28 has been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 while the body of the deceased is lying in UTH Mortuary awaiting postmortem.” She said.
In Eastern Province one person died after the vehicle he was in overturned.
The accident happened on 16th March, 2013 around 11:00 hours at Nkholondo Village area along the Great east Road.
Involved was Chilule Daka aged 47 of Kabangwe Township, Lusaka who was driving a Toyota Regius registration number ALF 9473.
The accident happened when the right rear tyre burst and overturned. The driver sustained head injuries and is admitted to St Francis Hospital.
One female child sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot and the body is lying at St Francis Hospital Mortuary.
The other two passengers Anne Mwale aged 42 and a male child sustained bruises and are admitted at St Francis Hospital.
In another incident in eastern Province, a motorist has died on the spot after being hit by another motorist.
The accident happened on 16th March, 2013 around 13:30 hours at Mwenzi area along Lundazi Road.
Involved was Enock Daka aged 27 of house number R/179 Kapata, Chipata who was driving a Toyota Corolla registration number ALG 8273. Also involved was Shadreck Banda aged 38 of Sido Compound, Chipata who was riding unregistered motor bike.
The accident happened when the driver misjudged the clearance distance and in the process hit into the rider who was ahead riding in the same direction. The rider sustained amputated left leg and head injuries and died on the spot. The driver sustained cuts on both hands and was treated as an outpatient.
The driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 while the body of the deceased rider is at Chipata General Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem.
